Whimsical Pavilion

Location

Year

Melbourne, Australia

2019

The pavilion design, Whimsical Ribbons, is rooted in the key concept of playfulness, which is something that can be communicated through not only the form of the pavilion but also the dynamic spatial experience created by the surrounding landscape. The ribbon-like structure can be regarded as a threshold or a view frame, as well as shade or a piece of furniture, allowing the inhabitation brief for both the lunchtime seminar and an evening quartet performance to be satisfied.

Using coated steel slat for the pavilion ensures its capacity of creating bending form while maintaining a high durability. Its colourful and smooth surface makes the site almost looks like a large-scale toy town and thus contributes to the representation of the key concept.
